Tom Dooley in Music & History In-Person

The Tom Dooley Files

Popular folk artist/musician Rob McHale, whose album Tom Dooley and Friends made the Top 10 on the Folk DJ Charts, will perform and as a special bonus, author Charlotte Corbin Barnes will talk about The Tom Dooley Files, her 500 page, non-fiction memoir that earned her the prestigious Book of the Year Award for 2017 from the North Carolina Society of Historians.

In 1958, the legend of Tom Dooley became internationally famous thanks to the chart-topping, Grammy-winning ballad Tom Dooley, by the Kingston Trio. However, the song does not tell much about what actually happened. Who was this Tom Dooley and why was he accused of murdering the girl he was allegedly going to marry? What did Grayson have to do with the story? Did Tom Dooley really commit the crime, or could the murderer have been someone else? What do the people of the North Carolina mountains, where Tom Dooly was born and raised, really believe happened?
